Shadow burst through the doors, ready to murder the first person he saw. This ship was a maze of corridors and sub-levels, and he still hadn’t figured out the Tagalt methodology behind their room designations. His best event was stepping into a transporter closet and tapping his desired destination on the map screen. At least that he could handle on his own. “Where are my people?”

Kai stepped beside Atlas, who blocked Shadow from getting in the way of the med-specialist.

Atlas made it clear, while still being polite, that he needed to tone it down a notch. “The humans are injured but should make a full recovery. None of them are in our system, which makes me wonder if they’re not from the Defiant, but were taken from the surface.”

Shadow struggled to suppress the rage within. He needed to find those responsible. He needed a target to direct his anger at. And by the looks on their faces, they needed the same thing. Fuck. They had nothing to go on.

Atlas stepped to the side and allowed him to see the humans being treated. “Please let me know if any of these people look familiar. If they are, then we have a serious fault in our system. If not, we have a breach in our security. Either way, my people need to know what to fix, and we need your help with that.”

He didn’t know them.

He exhaled a heavy breath, relieved, yet still worried about who these people were and where they’d come from. Somewhere on the surface, there was a community like his, missing five of its members.

He caught the tension in the look Atlas slid Kai. Yeah, they needed the humans placated. The Defiant refugees were vital to the future generations of Tagalt here on Atlantis.

They were right to be concerned. If he thought for a moment his people were in danger, he’d find a way to pull out and take them all back to the surface, no matter what.

Kai cast a glance to where Josie held the hand of the young woman. The bond between them was stronger than he realized. Hell, he was one to talk. Even with people getting kidnapped and stuffed into stasis tubes, half his mind was obsessing over Aly and the next opportunity to get her naked.

“You should know that none of these people would be alive if it weren’t for Josie,” Kai said, admiration thick in his voice. “She was the one who discovered their presence. She was also the one who wouldn’t let it drop when we didn’t find them initially. You should be proud of her.”

Shadow smiled and focused the non-obsessed half of his brain on the situation. “She was a pain in my ass back on the Defiant. If there was a problem, she wouldn’t let it go until she wormed out a solution. She was one of my best engineers and saved our asses more times than I can count. It’s a shame she’s working maintenance and not being put to better use.
